The Story Behind the Book
A Haunting in Harborne is a true account of the unexplained events reported by a Birmingham family living in a Victorian house in Harborne during the 1970s and early 1980s.
The book describes a wide range of phenomena, including apparitions, poltergeist activity, unexplained sounds and voices, objects moving without explanation, unusual lights, distinctive scents and physical disturbances. The accounts come from the memories of those who experienced them and, in some cases, from incidents witnessed by more than one member of the family.
These experiences stayed with Joanne for many years and became the foundation for her interest in documenting personal accounts of the unexplained, historical research and the preservation of such stories. This interest later led to the founding of Birmingham Ghosts and Hauntings UK.
Alongside the reported haunting, the book tells the story of the family itself and the effect these experiences had over many years. It does not attempt to provide a definitive explanation for what happened. Instead, it records the events as they were remembered and preserves the story of the people who lived through them.
A Haunting in Harborne is ultimately a memoir about fear, family and survival, and about experiences that remained unexplained long after the family had left the house.
Reader Responses

Written with deep reverence for the author’s parents and family, this deeply personal memoir offers an honest and engaging account of what happened inside those walls. Warm memories of togetherness kept them in that home, despite hardships. Unspoken dangers forced them out, which are difficult to explain to this day. Profoundly moving. A must read.

This book was such a riveting read from start to finish. It was an emotional journey in which you joined a family on their unexplained experiences in their family home. It shared their happier times along with some of the hardest moments. Written in such a beautiful way you felt the emotion in each and every moment and that you were in the moment with them. Truly a must read book into a families life and what goes on behind closed doors.
